One of the jury’s top recommendations was to protect the dunes at Summerleaze beach. On the back of this, with the support of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, 2 Minute Foundation, Making Space for Sand and Bude Climate Partnership, the first meeting of a Summerleaze dunes group took place at the end of February.
FIFTY, yes 50, people came along to the Parkhouse Centre to find out what it was all about and how they might get involved.
Andy Nelson, from Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Making Space for Sand, explained how dunes are not only vital barriers shielding us from powerful waves and sea level rise, but they are also a rich habitat for vegetation and wildlife. Future dunes group work to protect the dunes could include:
recording dune wildlife
invasive plant management
access management, such as fencing and signage
Next step: taster session on the dunes to consider the dune management plan and ecological reports, learn basic plant identification and highlight current problems.
