Who set the agenda for the Bude Area Community Jury?
Bude’s jury was guided by an ‘Oversight Panel’ of around 30 people. They included representatives from local community groups, youth groups, businesses, sports clubs, Budehaven School, Town Councillors, Cornwall Councillors and officers from Cornwall Council and the Environment Agency.
The Oversight Panel decided the question for the jury to consider. It also decided the demographic make-up of the jury, who to invite as commentators to advise the jury, and it ensured the process ran properly.
What was the question for the Bude Area Community Jury to consider?
How can we respond to a changing climate, including sea level rise, to support our community to thrive?
How was the jury funded?
The jury was part of Bude Climate Partnership’s Shoreline Engagement Project funded by the Climate Action Fund of The National Lottery Community Fund.
Who was invited for jury service?
In August 2023, every household in Bude-Stratton and the surrounding 10 rural parishes received an invitation to register interest in ‘jury service’. That was about 8,500 households. Everyone over the age of 16 in a household was invited to apply.
Who was selected?
Of the 171 registrations, 40 people were randomly selected through a sortition process. The final jury comprised of 34 people aged between 16 and 86, from across the wider Bude area.
What about young people?
Alongside the main jury, a mini-jury took place at Budehaven Community School in November 2023. This mini-jury developed its own recommendations, which can be found in the mini-jury section on this website.
Where and when did the jury meet?
The jury met on three weekends in September and November 2023, at Wooda Farm Holiday Park, near Bude. They met on separate five days, totaling 30 hours.
Did jury members get paid?
Yes. Every participant received £330 for their time, in the form of vouchers of their choice. Several jury members donated their vouchers to the local foodbank and circa £2k was spent on vouchers directly supporting the local economy.
What happened after the jury sessions?
The jury reached a set of ‘recommendations’ which were presented to the community at a ‘launch’ event in January 2024, at the Falcon Hotel in Bude. Almost 100 people attended this event, including senior figures from Cornwall Council, Environment Agency and local parish Councils. The event generated more than 40 actions and commitments from those who attended.
